Valuable conversations and special social events are often best held in a space that is a bit out of the ordinary – away from the office, home or usual hotel – however nice they may be.
Tyddyn Retreat can offer you that something special – a range of spaces in beautifully converted traditional stone barns, surrounded by wonderful natural sights and sounds on our own land and immediately around us.
If you’re looking for a special self-catering holiday cottage or a venue that you’ll want to make your own... this is what you’ll find at Tyddyn Retreat in Mid Wales.
Between the Upper Barn and Lower Barn cottages, Summerhouse Cabin and bedrooms in the Farmhouse cottage, we can sleep 14 as singles and 23 as doubles. With the addition of futons and foldaways, we are happy to welcome up to 36 residential guests. In addition there are camping spaces.

Our guests find that, for couples you are treated to the luxury of your own stylish home, and for larger groups, the per person per night cost is especially good value: you can enjoy a 5 star experience for an affordable price.

Stylish self-catering holiday cottages
In the Upper Barn and Lower Barn cottages, converted from 250 year old barns, there is a large open studio or living area, with ceilings reaching high up to the roof, and light filling the space from the many window. Each has a bedroom and crog loft (mezzanine), plus comfortable studio (living area) sleeping, providing for 6 or 7 people per cottage, with space for additional single futons or foldaways. Details and extras in your rooms have been carefully chosen: if you have any particular needs, please just ask and we will do our best to have what you need ready for your arrival. Traditional Farmhouse accommodation
We also welcome guests into our own Farmhouse, where we offer three double bedrooms, including one en-suite and a Kingsize. This is where your will also find our fully fitted contemporary cooking kitchen for the use of Farmhouse guests, and the traditional farmhouse kitchen as a dining room to gather in: 25 people can sit aorund the long table. Our Summerhouse cabin - deliciously peaceful, with views to the hills, and a veranda to soak up the evening sun or eat out under the stars. The same comfortable double futon sofabed as in the Upper Barn, is accompanied by a wardrobe, bookshelves and a beautiful hand painted washbasin - hand carried from Mexico to Wales! When you are sleeping here, you use the luxury steam shower and loo in the Guest Services Extension a few steps away.

Retreat and workshop leaders often appreciate staying in our Summerhouse Cabin - giving them some space a little away from the group when needed.
Additional local accommodation
Should you need accommodation for more than the number we can provide for you, our friends in Carno village and nearby can provide anything from B&Bs, to hidden cottages, to our local Aleppo pub, to the Measmawr Gallery and the historic Maesmawr Hall Hotel. We are happy to introduce you.
Sleeping well at Tyddyn Retreat
To ensure you get a great night’s sleep, all our mattresses are luxury pocket sprung, and most have an organic cotton cover. Each bed is provided with both a down pillow and hypoallergenic one: please do let us know if you would like to change either of them. Likewise, we offer a mix of duck down and hypoallergenic duvets – whichever you prefer.
Being warm & cozy
Underfloor heating, run by eco ground source heat, will keep you toasty in the cooler months, while the wood burner can add to the cozy feel for those nights in around the fire. Perhaps you might like to snuggle up in one of our delicious throws of recycled Welsh wool – they make a great gift too.
Eating well at Tyddyn Retreat
Catering: we offer tasty and nutritious meals on site through the catering skills of local fabulous cooks – anything from hearty local fare, to fine dining - just let us know what you need. The focus is on local organic ingredients. Special diets can easily be catered for too.
For larger groups, the Farmhouse traditional kitchen provides a special setting for meal times, while the adjoining full contemporary kitchen is perfect for cooking.
Self-catering: many guests enjoy self-catering.
In the Upper Barn and Lower Barn the self-catering holiday cottage facilities include a small oven with two hobs, two extra hobs, fridge, microwave, blender for smoothies etc, cooking pans and lots of utensils + crockery & cutlery of course. Both cottages have an oak extending dining table, which easily sits six people.
In the Farmhouse the contemporary cooking kitchen includes a large fan oven, 5 burner gas hob, microwave, dish washers, plus specialist slicers and dicers and all sorts of other lovely gizmos!

We invite and encourage all our guests to enjoy the amazing variety of local foods that are available here. We are happy to offer a Welcome Pack to introduce you to some of them, with most supplies coming from within 10 miles of Tyddyn Retreat.

The beauty of our land and the surroundings
Tyddyn Retreat is a tranquil haven, blessed with beautiful views in all directions. Two pretty meadows provide space for activities, conversation or quiet reflection - with natural group seating spaces and private hideaway resting places. Tall oak, ash and other indigenous trees are joined by planted features and flower gardens, and a magical ‘dingle’ with deep cuts streams, a pond and gentle waterfalls. Our tipi is for special gatherings or simply general enjoyment. A fire pit in the centre creates a special atmosphere for evening times.

High on our top meadow is our Stone Circle, with campfire in the centre.
Private & secluded - yet accessible
All this comes with a private, secluded, hideaway feeling while being easily accessible by train and road. We can offer exclusive access to Tyddyn Retreat and transport from Caersws station, 15 minutes away. If you’re driving we’re immediately off the A470 ‘spine’ of Wales - now named The Caledonian Way.
