The Royal Welsh Show is one of the most prestigious events of its type in Europe, bringing together the farming industry and rural community in a celebration of the best of British Agriculture with a unique and very special ‘Welsh' flavour. For Romy, your host at Tyddyn Retreat, this is the highlight of the year - combining special international spectacular events in the main ring, often involving horses, Spitfire flypasts, all manner of wonderful animals, and agricultural machinery (if that's your thing), and yummy food. And of course there is shopping, at the numerous stalls - including clothing, eco house building materials, useful products and many wonderful and unique crafts. www.rwas.co.uk/royal-welsh-show The 2015 dates are 20 - 23rd July. From Tyddyn Retreat it's an easy and enjoyable 1 hour drive.
The Wales Rally GB, The Rally of Legends, really is a spectacular event. While not all of us are full petrol heads, many people enjoy the thrills and spills of this international rally event through the wonderful local forests and countryside, or to just watching the famous drivers and their cars coming into Newtown for a pit stop. The 2015 dates are 12th - 15th November. In 2014 we watched in spectacular sunshine! Take a look at www.walesrallygb.com
The Machynlleth Comedy Festival. After a few short years, this festival has moved from being a largely local affair to an international 'must see', with the BBC broadcasting each day. And... if you get here soon, you may still be able to experience the festival as "a small but perfectly formed antidote to some of the more sprawling comedy festivals" (The Independent). As the festival team say " We’re passionate about the thrill of seeing live comedy in intimate places, and the glorious, picturesque and enchanting town of Machynlleth gave us a wealth of interesting and unique performance spaces in which to do this." There's plenty of delicious local food too, some workshops, and a children's programme. The sixth Machynlleth Comedy Festival takes place on 1st - 3rd May 2015. www.machcomedyfest.co.uk Here's a video from the 2014 festival http://vimeo.com/117351570
For 2015, we have a very special event coming to our area - The National Eisteddfod, from 1st - 5th August. One of the world's greatest cultural events, the National Eisteddfod is a celebration of the Welsh language and culture, through poetry, prose, music, the visual arts, drama and dance, plus science and technology.
In it's 154th year, with a fascinating history, this is the cultural event of the Welsh year. Preparing for each Eisteddfod takes two years, involving people of all ages. The result is an eclectic mix of the traditional and modern - combining ceremonial and official activities with a dynamic, young-spirited and welcoming festival. It really is something very particular to Wales and its culture, and takes place in a wonderful pink tent-like structure with eight points to it! Take a look at www.eisteddfod.org.uk/english/2015
The Welshpool Air Show is so popular that you need to get there early! This year (14th June, 2015) there are some truly remarkable displays on the way. It's a real coup for the show to have the confirmed appearance of the Great War Display Team, bringing 9 replica aircraft, or five different types. They will perform choreographed dogfights, complete with smoke swirls and aerial theatre. The favourite local display tream of the Old Buckers will wow the crowds with their close formation manoeuvres, and a Festival of Transport will complete the show. See www.welshpoolairshow.co.uk
Reflecting the distinctive culture of the Mid Wales area, there is also an extraordinary range of local community events throughout the year – including carnivals and show in many local towns. Our own Carno Show is on 15th August 2015. On this website and through our Facebook page we will let you know about special happenings that you might not otherwise find.
